Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these medications should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
