RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
